Most people think that liberalism started in the 1960s. It didn’t. It’s older than that. I didn’t know this until I came back to the Catholic Church in 2017, and began reading the encyclicals of Pope Pius IX (Syllabus of Errors, 1864), Pope Leo XIII (Libertas praestantissimum, 1888), and all the Popes until Pius XII (who died in 1958). Alas, the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s and all the popes after Pius XII taught exactly the opposite and promoted liberalism but more Catholics have had their eyes opened and are rejecting the modern liberal popes (including this new one, Leo XIV, who blessed a giant block of ice to show his membership in the Climate Change cult). The latest book to illuminate my mind about liberalism is Liberalism is a Sin by Father Felix Salva y Salvany published in 1884! That’s sometime ago but you can see how the violent revolutions and wars of the late 1800s and the entire 20th century took place. Liberalism (freedom, personal liberty, self actualization) was sold to the masses in a nice candy wrapper by elites who wanted to consolidate power (the unification of Italy - in my opinion, a giant failed state, as Italy itself is a collection of small provinces with their own traditions, dialects, food, ethnic groups), Germany (same), and so on. You cannot look at the problems today without reading these books and documents from the 1800s. Once you read them, everything falls into place and you say, wow, they warned us.
I do a video series for LifeSiteNews called frankly - in which I’ve discussed the nature of liberalism, Don Sarda’s book, and am currently doing a series on Pascendi - of Pope St Pius X.
The liberal idea is older than the French Revolution and the proto-liberals were called Whiggamores, later “whigs”. It’s a product of Enlightenment humanism - the idea that in the absence of the belief in God means the state and the beliefs it supplies should be rationalised. This means the worship of human reason in the place of Christ of course, and so here we are.
In short it’s a revolution against God and the divine natural order, and it’s a lot older than Beatlemania.
Yes I know liberal ideas pre-date the French Revolution but they spread faster and wider after Napoleon went gallivanting around Europe “liberating” various peoples. The prestige of France and French culture, as well as French intellectuals, convinced many people of the superiority of these ideas. I will look at your videos at LifesiteNews. It’s difficult to convince moderns about this but I noticed that it’s getting easier because of the chaos and violence spawned by liberal regimes. Today I went on a long walk with a friend who I call Mr. Enlightenment but after I put forth my anti-liberal arguments, behold, for the first time ever, he agreed. He even agreed that the concept of progress, which we have been indoctrinated to believe is a myth. The only reason he has finally come to see it this way is that the society is in a much worse place than it was 8 months ago when I last saw him.
If your attention is on the French Revolution as an expression of the false Enlightenment then I would recommend you read this book, which is freely available here.
The Rt. Hon. David Lammy is the most successful Professional Black Man in British history, who has grifted upwards by aggressively reminding everyone he is BLACK at all times (he is BLACK).
Well, after buying ironic Che Guevara onesies for the kids, they, like Proust, fetishized their living rooms leading to nervous collapse, regret and endless airbnbs.
Thanks for such insightful comments and analysis--along with hefty doses of humor--on such crucial topics. I started seeing your commentary on Life Site News a while back. And now find your Substack writing even more impactful. Great to see all of this with a solid Catholic background, Frank. Vivat Jesus!
One day, please consider expanding on the 'female' part. (Mentioned in the "Liberal Democracy, to make it sound nice to the spiritually and biologically female who make up much of the voting population.") We can't get that anywhere else—not since Proudhon's 1875 "La Pornocratie", I don't think—time for an update.
Proudhon is an interesting fellow. There’s a good compendium about anarchism called “Demanding the Impossible” that has a fair bit on him in it. Not the one you mentioned though.
There is more to that intentionally offensive barb than I can get into here, as I am sure you are aware (and possibly moreso than me). There is more to this than the male-to-male transsexualism prompted by the recent longhouse discourse of the online religion of new masculinity, marketed with Black Rifle Coffee, bearded bacon-munching degenerates, and other forms of lifestylism or consumer “rebellion”. The feminisation of men is the masculinisation of women, a concept with deep occult roots and one whose androgyny has been promoted in mass culture for decades (hunky dory anyone?).
The Bananarama women were met with the whine and howl of grunge hipster men who not very heroically decided to put their wives to work and found their own childten to be a bother. Grabbing a dress was clearly the next move.
I can’t get over your comment for its evocative power. Well said. So many feels. So many memories of the peak cringe of the Kurt Cobaib t-shirt. That note.
My mission in life is to insert as much of the Catholic Social Teaching into the new postliberal dispensation as possible. From that I will never defect.
Posts like this are an attempt to restore the vocabulary of experience to the reader, as we have all been conceptually impoverished by a century of lies in the service of a weapon of mass destruction.
I appreciate your giving us buffers even to your own work, Frank. And as to your grifter allusions above; I now have a new headache: Is it even possible to distinguish a useful idiot from a full-on grifter? (this is only a rhetorical question,…)
It’s a good question Brian and though it makes my brain hurt I do see the good in being made to think, though I would prefer not to.
I should say a grifter is an audience farmer: someone who says what they must to gain and retain a captive market.
The idea is to keep getting paid.
A useful idiot is someone who unwittingly supports a position they do not comprehend and which may be deleterious to them in unforeseen ways. They may or may not get paid.
Finally there are paid producers who create content for consumption which positions the message of their sponsors. They know what they’re doing and they’re in it for the money and the fame etc. This is usually the most lucrative choice, but there are some stellar grifters who give the court scribes a run for their money.
I think it’s fair to ask for a definition of any terms anyone uses, so here we are.
In this case, Venezuela is the production location and the current occupant of DaPuppetHouse - formerly DaWhiteHouse - is playing John Wayne - I mean wouldn't you take that ticket? I always liked to play war as a kid......but as this post from a few days ago so clearly outlines:
"The United States doesn’t just seek to run Venezuela; it seeks to run the Western Hemisphere. The State is tying up its loose ends in order to secure itself. It won’t be Trump running this new operation either; it will be his backers, the men who sat behind him at his inauguration, the men who have been in positions of power before Trump and will be there after Trump is gone. They’re just using Trump to further their goals in a now multipolar world. The bombing of Iran and the kidnapping of Maduro all violate international law and give other countries an excuse to do the same, but international law never mattered, and the United States no longer cares."
I wonder if the plan is to just kill off all the right wing militia guys in Ukraine so they can import ten million Pakistanis and Nigerians? Something tells me they won't all conveniently die and may have some objections to the New Ukranians.

"Against Rousseau: On the State of Nature and On the Sovereignty of the People" by Joseph de Maistre.
It is short, merciless, truthful and funny.
Brilliant and fascinating, as usual. Except the references to Lammy which went over my American head, never having heard of him before....

Hello, I really enjoyed your article — especially the way you approached the topic.
I’ve started using Substack more recently; I’m Brazilian and I mainly write about South American geopolitics.
I’ve noticed your work has been gaining more subscribers, which is not surprising given the quality of the analysis.
I just wanted to share the compliment and follow your work more closely.
Thank you Lucas I’m glad you think my output worth your time! Best of luck on Stack and I shall have a look at what you do, too!

Thank you Steve! You might like the series I did on the political economy of the Church - the Catholic social teaching of Leo XIII.
Will check it out, Frank.

Thank you, Mr Factist. Glorious times ahead.

Yes 90s whingecore has a lot to answer for.
Where are the Bananarama women of yesteryear? A Proustian anguish filled me.
I do think things will be normal again, and we can go back to being happy being women and men.
I certainly hope to blank you are right, Frank. But now what am I to do with all my MAGA/populous YouTube gurus?
Grifters gonna grift Brian! (I’m not like the other grifters lol)
Thanks for your insight, Frank: I suppose it’s even possible for you to switch sides at any time, but give us a hint if you do,…

and remind me never to go toe to toe with you (no height allusion either).
Outstanding! Thanks for the rays of hope.
Next to Jesus and 11 of his apostles, Stephen Miller is my favorite Jew.
An aside: next time you post that bloated obscenity's picture, you should caption it, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?"
I’ve read a lot and watched a lot of what miller has been up to in researching this and it’s well worth looking into.
‘The spiritually …female ‘😂😂😂
Seems like some of us see different realities from the same movie.
I see pure Hollywood - DaSynagogue of Satan writes the script - in turn it hires actors so they can play John Wayne - https://crushlimbraw.blogspot.com/2022/10/propaganda-lifeblood-of-dasynagogue-of.html?m=0 - after all, who invented propaganda movies?
In this case, Venezuela is the production location and the current occupant of DaPuppetHouse - formerly DaWhiteHouse - is playing John Wayne - I mean wouldn't you take that ticket? I always liked to play war as a kid......but as this post from a few days ago so clearly outlines:
