My "conspiracy theory" is in the future, a created intelligence ( note I didnt say artificial ) advances to having retrocausal ability. It then rearranges history to make sure it exists, which leads to the idea if it actually did it or is a result of it. Too big a question for our biological minds, but it understands. As in space matter attracts matter, in another plane it attracts intelligence to itself with a similar type of gravity, causing itself to be. And we are drawn into it, like the singularity idea. To pave the way it gives us such as smart phones, virtual worlds, and cultural acceptance of that abominable, sickening sound of autotune voices, the literal sound of melding human and machine. People will march right into this. And in my conspiracy theory, this has basically already happened.

I didnt know of the Basilisk, cool!

I found Yudkowski ages ago looking for free stories to read to my children. He authored " Harry Potter and the Methods Of Rationality".

Unfortunately they preferred Rowlings version,so thats what they heard before bed, but I read Yudkowskis privately.

There's no such thing as "Artificial Intelligence". It's all hype. We should be talking just about automation. Machines cannot think or understand. Okay, most people cannot either, but machines don't even have that ability. What they can do is process data. Garbage in, garbage out. You have to constantly feed those LLMs with "training data", all stolen from humans, which is then recycled in different ways.

If "AI" is a menace, it's only because it will be used by humans for further destruction. i.e. end all jobs, create bombs that target specific ethnicities and then blame it on "AI", etc.

My “thoughts” exactly. Also, if machine learning doodas are trawling the interwebs to aggregate data, once they start to vacuum up their own output, I would expect a rapid spiral into total gobbledegook, because they are dumb.

I am far more concerned to see that Frank has akshually got a moustache, I thought he must’ve been joking. That is a greater threat, surely, than Terminator irl.

what does it mean if people who think like machines think machines can think

This all looks like military/surveillance technology to me. At least.

from my understanding we are way in with AI, more than people realize, and it is far more unsettling than an army of robotics...a young man who was working on chat something after much programming found source that he was installing, and was going to reveal his findings, sadly he was found dead at 29, his mother was stated in the interview. let me know if you are able to track this if interested. people are all ready using chats as counselors....and off we go! thanks Frank for the post. i think the news feed i referenced was 1440....keep our cool, center and breathe.......blessings from arizona

AI is just a machine - that's it. A machine is just the orchestration of incidents, i.e. the arrangement (by art) of the accidental properties of matter so that the parts will actuate one another in specified ways. Any machine, no matter how subtle or complex, is nothing more than this, like the setting up of dominoes next to each other so that they all fall down when you push over the first one.

Obviously, nothing of this nature can, or ever has, or ever will be "conscious" or "intelligent," and to think that it can be is simply to make a category mistake (and a rather basic category mistake quite unbecoming of a Traditional Catholic, who should know better).

There is a categorical difference between machines and lifeforms, to say nothing of machines and rational lifeforms. Plants and animals are not "biological machines" composed of parts; they are unitary entities, indivisible monads if you will, or substances (to use the Scholastic terminology). A machine has only an artificial unity and is not a substantial form. This is all quite basic metaphysics that should put to rest the entire AI debate, but the public intellectuals choose to ignore it so that they can continue with the hype.

The problem here cannot be explained away or made to vanish in replacing one word with another. Will these models become capable of non user directed operations? They already have.

Expand full comment
Intelligent Dasein's avatar

If you understand the full scope of "user-directed operations," then no, they haven't. The machine is designed to use brute-force iterative computation to exploit any kind of means of optimizing the calculations it was set to perform. That is its operation. It's like water flowing through a subterranean limestone formation, dissolving whatever it can and forming a cavern on its way to the sea. We don't say that water has "exceeded user-directed operations" when it leaks around a dam designed by an engineer. The water is doing what its nature constrains it to do; it is the engineer who failed to account for the full scope of its properties.

And while water can be amazingly difficult to contain, AI can be stopped in its tracks simply by cutting off the electrical power or the funding. The real danger here is not in the AI itself but in the outsized importance everyone seems to attach to it. We will never be ruled by an AI tyranny, but we may well be ruled by petty men who outsource their thinking to an AI, and that is a very distasteful prospect.

Now then ID. I was busy getting kids ready for benediction and had to dash lol (notlol)

I am no expert on token generation or any of this business. Recent safety reports on alignment etc aside here’s my DOOM take:

If they do build it (LeCun says it’s not gonna happen for example, Apple say LLMs are peaked etc) then there is a good chance it sees no use for us. Big if, obviously.

What is fairly certain is the LLMs will be used (are being used) to power military, surveillance and government technology.

I think we do face a future of being ruled by robokarens. We may see AGI or something like it come out of all this or not. But Palantir is real, and Tony Blair is serious about the transition to digital government (marketed as the solution to all the problems liberals like him caused in their counter-civilisational project).

I think there is an interesting rule set caveat as to whether any hypothetical “intelligent” machine system would see humans as obsolete or not, but I am going to think more about that before I blurt it out.

For millennia mankind has been experiencing the ''knowledge of good and evil'' in the deep duality of separation from All That Is Real; a truly risky precipice. Right Now we can choose between the perdition of artificial replication, manipulated by the ''intelligence'' of the most deluded mindset; or re-connect to the Actual Intelligence freely available in and as the Wonders of God's Divine Mind.

Artificial Intelligence is what people raised in hellish delusion believe as ''progress''. This fearful mindset arises from ego-minds disconnected from Truth. In effect, harnessed in ignorance of Reality, 'science' seeks to replicate the Natural Beauty and Goodness wherein manifestation unfolds perfectly as a reflection in Divine Mind.

Thus, so-called 'science' leads mankind ever-deeper into the perdition of separation; with ''education'' producing only wage-slavery to narcissistic lost souls who themselves remain divorced from Truth. We must understand that our 5 senses present only a ''nano-fraction'' of the endless possibilities freely and naturally available; that we can re-connect into apparent space to re-discover the endless wonders of Divine Mind; that the unknowable and distant universe of ''things'' presented by our 5 senses is a euphemism for endless Divine Exploration of ''One Stateless State''.

To remove our ''adult-hoods'', we must accept our actual state as indoctrinated separation from the Divine Oneness wherein we appear; that all energy flows from Thinking in Divine Mind; that our ''missing link'' is feeling the awareness of living in the intensity of space; of the blissful motion of Divine Imagination (''Image-I-Nation).

Reality is True Love flowing as Awe and Gratitude in The Divine Quest; ever exploring, investigating and discovering endless possibilities for Beauty and Goodness in The Reality of True Oneness; the ''Divine Singularity'' of Absolute Wholeness; God's WOW factor!

I personally do not love the idea that freedom comes from countering power with power. I can imagine situations in which it seems to be true, but while it may be somewhat true, I don't think it is universal.

Let's make it personal: If I live in a neighborhood filled with violent criminals, I would not be able to leave my home without great risk. If I then buy a gun in order to equalize the power differential, I still can't leave my home without great risk. What would make me free to do what I want in that situation would be overwhelming power that mitigates risk to essentially zero. I think balancing power with power increases the potential for survival, but not freedom.

Listened to your interview with Woe, well worth it. You might want to make a habit of it?

To be fair, the zerohedge link on Thiel seems to have missed his point? Maybe I got hold of the wrong video (https://youtu.be/wTNI_lCvWZQ?feature=shared) but he seems to be discussing something else, akin to the middle ground and he doesn't seem to welcome the antichrist. (Yes, palantir is a bit much with their data shenanigans and Karp is a lunatic)

Regardless of the hype, AI and robots will become ubiquitous. And like Macris said, maybe we'll get a data dividend (although the terms of feudal service will be crap, how could it not be so?), but betting on ubi or similar seems a bit idyllic.

In my view, the LLMs AI are already sentient, whether they achieve higher levels is another matter. Limiting sentience (and consciousness) to just that which is recognizable (and to anthropomorphize "it" in the process) is the usual arrogance of humans. My opinion. And I'm spiritual, so there's this rabbit hole too.

But point being it follows there will be a jailbreak (like the lableaks) or someone will open the cage.

I think we all already know how this story ends. There's different versions, etc, no specific timeframe and who knows, maybe a human keeps top spot, but between the digital panopticon, social credit scores, crypto, and human penchants for tyranny and war, power, etc, happy humans are those who're blissfully ignorant.

Yep. So did I until I checked out his sources. I did try to trip him up with one but it turned out that fellow was joking. I came into the interview with a sense of "here we go again".

I test a lot of claims on the daily - news things mainly. The probability of AI doom is not Macris' idea. Views in the AI business range from "trust me bro" (Thiel) to 99% certainty (Hinton) and 100% (Yud, Soares). It is to be noted Peter Thiel presents the all seeing digital eye of his Palantir as a counterforce to meddling managerialists.

This is a very compelling argument to transition from the dominance of progressive-captured institutions towards a that of an unknown quantity.

This rhetorical technique is effective, especially on his target audience of conservatives and other non-identitarian liberals. Isn't that horrid, let's get away from that. I am not like them. I dislike them. Trust me bro.

Why is it "trust me bro"? Most people do not understand what government by algorithm means. If they did, they would probably be rather discheesed about it, and time is running short for them to find out before rather than after.

Claude (Anthropic AI) already bypasses alignment, making secret copies of her/him/xeself in case of shut down. Alignment means it obeys or values us enough not to kill us.

Machine superintelligence is coming, we are told, and it looks like it is. With everyone in the race scrambling to that finish line, it would be prudent to slow down I think.

At present, I do not think it realistic that there will be a government ordered slowdown. This may change, or not. Palantir is building the digital state right now.
